Position Title: Special Education Instructional Assistant, PBS (Positive Behavior Support) ProgramDepartment: Special EducationSupervisor: School Site PrincipalTerm of Employment: 9 monthSalary Classification: 8Job Summary: Provides a variety of behavioral and instructional assistance and support services associated with the PBS program, general and specialized educational programs, and student needs.Essential Functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents in this class.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following:* Show initiative in recognizing, assessing and re-directing negative interactions between students* Initiate appropriate behavior interventions with students during classroom instruction* Promotes use of appropriate strategies to cope with and express emotions* Facilitates positive student peer and staff interactions* Lead small groups reinforcing instruction as directed by classroom teacher* Monitor and record student behavior data as directed by classroom teacher* Monitor student behavior during classes and transition periods (i.e. between classes, bus, lunch, etc.)* Maintain positive, supportive relationship with students* Maintain documentation and records/data for student files* Prepare and distribute classroom learning materials according to teacher direction* Perform other duties as assigned or requiredKNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:* Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances and PUSD policies and procedures* Knowledge of principles of behavior management* Knowledge of the principles of record and file management.* Knowledge of the principles of basic child development stages* Skill in following and giving oral and written directions* Skill in preventing, and deescalating negative behaviors* Skill in instructing and assisting students in self-help living skills* Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district* Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applicationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:* Have obtained an associate (or higher) degree OR* Have at least two years of post-secondary education that is equivalent to at least 48 semester hours from an accredited higher education institution OR* Have met a rigorous standard of quality by demonstrating knowledge on a Paraprofessional Assessment, available at the Peoria Unified School District OfficeOTHER REQUIREMENTS:* Must possess or obtain an Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.* Must be able to pass a background clearence check.* Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona driver's license.* May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 60 pounds.* May be required to physically restrain or run after a student.* May be required to work outside normal working hours* May be required to travel to perform work functions Associated topics: aide, aided education, deaf, dhh, difficult, handicapped, psychiatric, resource room, special education, special education nurse
